Freshman Seminar is a required course which provides 9th graders with everything they need to know to survive high school, college or the workplace! Students will improve life skills by incorporating the content of their required summer reading,
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens
, by Sean Covey, into this class. The "Habits" teach the students about taking responsibility for everything in life, setting long-term goals based on true-north principles and time management. They also encourage students to listen to another's point of view, to value other people's opinions, and to work in teams and to focus on balanced self-renewal. By incorporating concepts of Personal Finance, the course will help students understand the impact of individual choices on occupational goals and future earning potential. This course will provide a foundational understanding for making informed personal financial decisions. It also incorporates fundamental business concepts that will prepare students to successfully interact in a complex business environment and studies basic economics from both a business and a historical perspective. Students will also work on vital career readiness skills such as word processing, professionalism and career preparation. This course satisfies the graduation requirement for Economics and Personal Financial Literacy dictated by the New Jersey Department of Education. Freshmen Seminar is also compliant with the practical arts requirement needed for graduation.
